Iceland Trip May/June 2023 Week 1

Hello and welcome back! It is us! The Iceland Gang!

With this post we will take you on our little weekend adtventure with us! There is so much to see!

This is our route. Let´s go!

All the luck was on our side on that day! There was no rain, just sunshine and a few clouds in the sky! Allthough it was still pretty windy. Our first stop was the black sand beach in Vík í Mýrdal. Unlike in Germany, Island has mostly beaches with black sand and not white sand.

The view was amazing and if you look closely you can see three stacks in the third picture. A legend says, that these stacks originated when two trolls dragged a three-masted ship to land unsuccessfully. When daylight broke they became needles of rock.

While traveling in the car we saw many pastures with horses and also sheep! They all look so sweet and fluffy 🙂

The next stop was the diamond beach, also called Jökulsárlón. It is a large glacial lake  in the southern part of Vatnajökull. The ice parts in the water break into little pieces and drift to the beach’s shore. When the sun shines, the ice and the water at the beach sparkle like diamonds.

After a short break, we went to the Dyrhólaey lighthouse not far from the village Vík í Mýrdal. As you might know, Island is known for its windy and rainy weather-

Well, as soon as we arrived at the lighthouse, the wind was so strong it almost blew us over the edges and into the sea. So we only could take a few pictures or we would have been blown away.

Sólheimajökull was our next stop. It is a glacier between the two vulcanos Katla and Eyjafjallajökull.

Last but not least we visited the Skógafoss waterfall in on the Skógá River. Be careful if you ever visit this place, the chances that a bird might poop on you are very high. They build their nests on the stonewalls of the waterfall and are literally everywhere. But the view was pretty amazing and the sound of the waterfall was mighty and very nice.
